In Solidarity with Venezuela
The GEO stands in solidarity with the Venezuelan people and affirms their right to self-determination.
It is through this solidarity that the GEO denounces the US government's abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on January 3, 2026 and condemns the Trump administration’s plans to “run” Venezuela and Venezuelan oil sales. While we acknowledge the mixed feelings of many Venezuelans and the suffering they have endured under the Maduro government, we also recognize that US regime change interventions in Latin America and other regions have resulted in new forms of suffering, not liberation. We further condemn the threats of intervention that the Trump administration has levied against numerous countries, including Colombia, Mexico, and Greenland, in the wake of its intervention in Venezuela.
We stand with graduate workers at UIUC from Venezuela, and encourage affected Venezuelan GEO members to reach out to GEO’s Solidarity Committee should they need any support from their union.
